Lupus, an autoimmune disease, may cause inflammation throughout the body, including the joints, skin, blood vessels, and organs like the kidneys. Although the etiology of lupus is unclear, it is believed that a mix of genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors contribute to its occurrence.

Each year, around 16,000 new cases are recorded in the United States. Lupus mostly affects women, however 10% of sufferers are male.

Medication and lifestyle modifications may help reduce inflammation and organ damage.
